5 Real Reasons Why Teenagers Experiment with Drugs and Alcohol

Posted in: Tweens, Teens and Youth

  • Bonding Experience

Teenagers turn to drugs and alcohol to help them feel more confident or to bond with a social group that is known for using these substances. Encouraging your children to join clubs and sports can help them make friends in a healthy way.

  • Boredom

Teenagers do drugs because they are simply bored and have no deeper interests. Try giving your teenager more responsibilities or extra-curricular activities to get involved with so that he or she doesn’t have the time to think about substance use.

  • Curiosity

Many teens begin experimenting with drugs and alcohol simply because they are curious and want to know what it feels like. Educating your child on the repercussions may extinguish this curiosity.

  • Depression and Stress

When teenagers are sad or depressed they see these substances as a way to forget and feel happier. It is their attempt to self-medicate and relax. Teaching your children coping skills can go a long way to prevent substance abuse.

  • Female teenagers often turn to harder drugs such as cocaine for a quick way to lose weight.

During high school especially, young girls become more body-conscious and may become desperate to slim down and attract the attention of popular boys.

If you’re a parent of a teenager who uses drugs or is at risk of using drugs, check to see if they fit into any of these categories. Understanding why teenagers use drugs is the first step to helping them avoid or overcome drug use.
