What To Do When Your Child Fails An Exam

Posted in: Child health and Parenting

As a parent/guardian, you have tried really hard in helping your child perform well in his/her exams by employing a tutor and enrolling them in after school lesson. But after all this, your child fails an exam. It can be devastating and embarrassing at times.

Here are some helpful tips to consider when your child fails an exam;

Don’t get angry or show your disappointment

Easier said than done, right?

It is perfectly fine to express how the score is unacceptable, but getting angry or showing your disappointment will also not help the situation. When you speak in anger, especially immediately you hear the news, you may say things that hurt your child in the long run.

The deed has been done and you can’t change what’s happened, you can only move forward by being positive and supportive to your child. Look for a calmer time for both you and your child to talk.

Don’t compare

Saying things like “your friends that passed, do they have 2 heads?”, that will only beat down your child’s confidence. Don’t compare your child with his/her siblings or any other child.

Comparing them to other children will only upset them more and make them lose confidence in themselves.

Track your child’s progress

Know their strengths and weakness to come up with a plan, if your child should re-take the exam or do a change of course. Also, consider what activities will be done with your child at home.

Track how they use their time and teach them other things aside from their regular curriculum.
