How To Stop Siblings From Fighting

Posted in: Child health and Parenting

Some kids might be lucky enough to become the best of friends with their siblings, but it is common for siblings to fight, settle, fight, and settle again.

Sibling rivalry is becoming something that happens every day especially in younger children who don’t have more appropriate conflict resolution skills. Sibling rivalry starts even before the second child is born, and continues as the kids grow and compete for everything from toys, belongings to attention.

As kids reach different stages of development, their needs keep changing and can significantly affect how they relate to one another. It can be hard to manage the fighting, stop the fight, or even consider getting involved in the fight. But you can take some steps to promote peace in your household thereby stopping your kids from fighting and helping them to get along.

Don’t get involved

If possible, don’t get involved, it will only escalate the problems. Stay calm and step in only if there’s a danger of physical harm.

When getting involved

  • Separate kids until they’re calm.
  • Don’t put too much focus on figuring out which child is to blame.
  • Let them express their negative emotions
  • Give equal attention to them
  • Don’t label your kids with names (troublesome child, the smart one, the wicked one)

Helping Kids Get Along

  • Set rules for acceptable behavior
  • Encourage kids to resolve crisis themselves
  • Provide parental attention to your kids
  • Look after each child’s need
  • Encourage positive attributes
  • Establish a peaceful way for your kids to spend time together

Getting Professional Help

In some cases, the conflict between siblings can be so severe that it disrupts daily functioning, or particularly affects kids emotionally or mentally. In such cases, it is advisable to get professional help.

Siblings will fight no matter what. However, these tips will go a long way in serving them well as they grow older in their day-to-day lives.
