Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) In Kids

Posted in: Child health and Parenting

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition of the brain that makes it hard for children to control their behavior.

It is one of the major chronic behavior in childhood. Children with diagnosed ADHD have frequent, severe problems that interfere with their ability to live a normal life.

The cause of ADHD is unclear, but there are a lot of treatment options. As a parent, you play a vital part in providing effective treatment for your child and the first step is knowing. Because how can you tell there is a problem when you don’t even know it is a problem?

A child with ADHD can show the following symptoms;

  1. Inattention: Having a hard time paying attention, easily distracted, daydreams, loses a lot of things.
  2. Hyperactivity: Always on the move, squirms, talks a lot and finds it hard to sit still.
  3. Impulsivity: Acts or speaks without thinking, unable to wait, interrupts others.

Does it mean that my child has ADHD, if I observe any of these symptoms?

No!

Observing these symptoms in your child doesn’t always mean it is ADHD, you will have to observe these symptoms for up to 6 months. Does it occur in different places like at home, school, etc? Do they behave the same way to you and others?

Only a doctor can diagnose ADHD.

How can I help child at home?

  1. Provide structure: Your child should know there is a time for everything. Putting them on a time table goes a long way in helping.
  2. Teach communication: Your child should learn how to use their words in communicating their feelings instead of acting out and throwing tantrums.
