Diarrhea diseases account for 1 in 9 child deaths worldwide, making diarrhea the second leading cause of death among children under the age of 5.
Diarrhea is the body’s way of getting rid of germs. You can find a lot of different textures, colors, and odors in a baby’s poopy diaper based on what they are eating (breast milk, formula, or solid foods).
The poop is normally much softer than adult’s, and it’s not uncommon for it to be even softer than usual sometimes. But if it suddenly gets much looser or more watery, and happens more often and in large amounts, it may be diarrhea.
A lot of things can cause diarrhea in babies, including;
1. Virus (such as Rotavirus): An infection of the intestines from a virus is the most common cause.
2. Bacteria (such as Salmonella): It is the least common cause of diarrhea. It makes diarrhea often contain streaks of blood.
3. Giardia (a parasite): More likely in child care center outbreaks.
4. Antibiotic Diarrhea: Many antibiotics cause mild diarrhea. It is not an allergic reaction. Keep giving the antibiotic and call your doctor if any serious symptoms occur.
5. Serious Causes: Most bacterial diarrhea goes away on its own. A few can cause a severe large bowel infection (such as Shigella Colitis).
6. Dehydration: This is a type of health problem in which the body has lost too much fluid.
Other Causes
7. Cow’s Milk Allergy: It can cause loose, slimy stools in babies and can also be blood-streaked. Starts within the first 2 months of life. All you need to do is avoid cow’s milk formulas.
8. Lactose Intolerance: Lactose refers to the sugar in milk. Most babies are unable to absorb lactose. The main symptoms are a lot of gas, loose stools, and stomach bloating.
