Fostering Your Child’s Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

Posted in: Child health and Parenting

Emotions play a large and vital role in our lives. Emotional intelligence encompasses awareness, understanding, and the ability to express and manage one’s emotions.

Children have emotions too. It is important to start early letting them know what these emotions are, the triggers, and teaching them how to manage all these emotions they will be having.

Strengthening your child’s emotional intelligence matters because being unable to manage his emotions can affect other aspects of his life. Here are the benefits of fostering your child’s emotional awareness.

  • Children with high emotional intelligence perform better at school.
  • Better social relationships.
  • They are less likely to display behavior problems.
  • They are more likely to consider that they are in control of what happens to them.
  • They are more likely to be school-ready and happier than kids unable to manage their emotions.

Fostering your child’s emotional intelligence might be one of the most important things you can do as a guardian to ensure his/her future success. While working towards developing your child’s emotional intelligence, it is important to note that the safer your child feels, the more likely he is to learn to express his emotions appropriately.

Developing your kid’s emotional intelligence is neither an easy fit to accomplish, nor does it occur overnight. Be patient and remember that there are many simple and age-appropriate ways to foster his emotional regulation skills.

Here are other things to bear in mind to foster your child’s emotional intelligence:

Talk often, but for short periods: It is more effective to talk about emotions often for short periods than to talk infrequently over long periods.

Picking the right moment matters: Do not try to talk to your kid about emotions when he is in the middle of a meltdown or when you are tired or upset. It won’t work. The best time to talk to your child about emotions is when you are both calm, relaxed, and attentive.

Relate discussions about emotions to your child: Talking to your kids about emotions is great. Relating those emotions to specific situations affecting your child is even better.

Remember, your child is far from perfect and you should not put a child under pressure to be perfect every time. They are still learning to figure out their emotions, just like you.
