How To Help Your Child Overcome Rejection

Posted in: Child health and Parenting

No one likes to be rejected. It is uncomfortable, painful, and can leave lasting emotional scars. While you want to protect your child, it is important to avoid belittling or brushing off your child’s sadness.

It is inevitable for kids to feel disappointed, rejected, and defeated at times. Resilience is a valuable character trait that we can foster in our children.

Here are tips to help your children deal with all of the emotions that come with feeling rejected;

  1. Make failing safe.
  2. Comfort and validate their experience. When our kids feel validated and understood, it helps them build a sense of self.
  3. Tie your children’s value to their character, not their achievements.
  4. Teach them the difference between constructive criticism and verbal abuse.
  5. Just be available to provide support, do not judge.
  6. Be available to your child during the sensitive time in their development.

Help your child not to overgeneralize and try not to personalize or take the blame for other actions. Finally, when children accept themselves and others for who they are, the easier it is for them to deal with feelings of rejection.
