Let’s Talk Definitions: Are You A Tween, Teen, Or Youth?

Posted in: Tweens, Teens and Youth

So which are you? A tween? Teen? Or Youth?

If you are an adolescent, meaning you are between the ages of 10 to 19 years – you can either be a tween, teen, or youth. I think that’s pretty cool and just goes to show how diverse and complex adolescents can be 😐

If you’re a tween you’re almost a teenager but not just yet, you’re between 9 and 12years old.

Now, this is the point where you’re impressionable, meaning you’re more likely to be easily influenced by other people’s opinions. This could be your family members or peers. At this point, you’re still battling dependence/independence from your family.

As a teen, you’re between 13 and 19 years old. You’re more in tune with yourself, you have an idea of what you like, dislike, and what your interests are.

You are more conscious of “belonging” which makes you at risk of peer pressure especially if you’re between 14 and 17 years old. The good thing is, peer pressure can be positive if done right.

As a youth, you’re between 15 and 24 years old. Now ideally, in the adolescent world, youths are expected to have their act together because they’re older but really, it is okay if you’re still figuring yourself out.

Youths typically have career dreams and aspirations, they are less at risk of the dangers of peer pressure because their brains are more developed – and I’m speaking scientifically not throwing shade 🙂

You might be wondering why all of this is important. Here’s why, adolescence is a special time in everyone’s life. It lays the foundation and plays an important role in shaping your future. The habits you imbibe last forever. It’s time to experiment and try new things but within limits. Take the time to discover yourself. Try out sports, arts, whatever interests you may have while you’re young and fearless.

All we ask, is that you take risks within reason and allow us to guide you on your way.
