Mental Health And Self Care For Young People

Posted in: Tweens, Teens and Youth

Adolescence is a crucial period for developing and maintaining social and emotional habits important for mental well-being. These include adopting healthy sleep patterns, taking regular exercise, learning to cope, problem-solving, developing interpersonal skills, and learning to manage emotions.

Many factors determine one’s mental health outcomes. The more risk factors adolescents are exposed to, the greater the potential impact on their mental health. Some adolescents are at greater risk of mental health conditions due to the quality of their home life and relationships with peers, violence (including harsh parenting and bullying), media influence, socioeconomic problems happening around them, among others.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed by the happenings in your environment, be assured that it is a normal response. Here are some tips to take care of yourself;

Keep Your Body And Mind Healthy

  • Stay active
  • Eat well
  • Sleep well

Keep In Touch With Your Loved Ones

Make every effort to talk to the people you care about. If they’re far away, stay in touch through e-mail, phone calls, and video chat.

Understand How You Feel

Don’t ignore it. Make a habit of tuning in to how you feel in different situations throughout the day.

Be Kind To Yourself

Kindness towards ourselves has the potential to help you move forward from difficult feelings.

Avoid Unhealthy Ways Of Coping With Stress

People cope with stress in different ways, but sometimes our coping mechanisms can be unhealthy, and can actually harm our mental and physical health. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Try to keep things in perspective.

Take A Break From Social Media

Improve your mental health by taking a break from social media if possible.

If you’re struggling with your mental health, or you’re worried about one of your friends, there are lots of organisations and charities that offer help specifically for young people.
