2 Did I wear my dress too short or pull my skirt too high?
Did my swinging hips call out as you walked by?
I came to your house so I asked for it?
I read at the church so you can get a piece?
Did my 9year old body look just ripe?
Or were my 6-year-old breasts perked on high?
Excuses, excuses, weak people with excuses
When you touched my skin didn’t I put up a fight?
When you held my hands didn’t I plead in fright?
You shut my mouth to silence my scream.
Held me bound to reduce my steam.
You’ll probably say it serves me right.
Come up with a reason in your twisted mind.
But in your still moment, I hope you’ll see.
What cost you 5 minutes just cost me my life.
By definition, RAPE is an “Unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or mouth of another person, with or without force, by a sex organ, other body parts, or foreign object, without the consent of the victim.” It can also be defined as an “Unlawful sexual activity and usually, sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against a person’s will or with a person who is beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent because of mental illness, mental deficiency, intoxication, unconsciousness, or deception”
A survey carried out in 2019 by NOI Polls found that one in every three girls would have experienced at least one form of sexual assault by the time they reach 25 years and most incidents of rape occurred either at the victim’s house or the perpetrator’s house.
Rape is a crime, it robs victims of dignity, peace, and sanity. It causes trauma not just to the body but to the mind with scars to carry for life.
